WASHINGTON, D.C., January 22, 1998 - The Jewish Institute for National
Security Affairs (JINSA) views with enthusiasm the warm embrace that Prime
Minister Netanyahu has received from his longtime friends and allies in
various Christian organizations. They understand, and have always
understood, the importance of Israel to the United States and to the
democratic principles that we value. It was appropriate and correct for
the Prime Minister to meet with those who have been his most vociferous
supporters.
At the same time, JINSA is dismayed by the statements made by leaders of
three major Jewish organizations (Anti-Defamation League, American Jewish
Committee, and the American Jewish Congress) condemning Prime Minister
Netanyahu for meeting with members of Christian organizations.
"We do not understand their reasoning," said Tom Neumann, Executive
Director of JINSA. "These same leaders encourage the Prime Minister of
Israel to meet with Yasir Arafat, the leader of an organization whose
covenant still calls for the destruction of the State of Israel, while
criticizing him for meeting with Christian organizations that have long
been proponents of a strong and secure Israel."
