Little by little, former Rep. Shelley Berkley, D-Nev., is bouncing back from her narrow loss last fall in a rugged race against Republican Sen. Dean Heller.

Berkley, 62, who left behind a seven-term career in the House to take on the incumbent appointed to replace retired Sen. John Ensign, R-Nev., lost by just 12,000 votes out of nearly a million cast Nov. 6.

“I’m easing back into civilian life,” a relaxed Berkley said by phone on Tuesday afternoon from a shopping mall in Las Vegas. “I was in public office for 30 years—14 in Congress—and so I was heartbroken after the election. No regrets, but I was heartbroken.”

One step on the road to recovery came last week when Berkley accepted an invitation to join the board of the Jewish Institute for National Security Affairs, a Washington-based group formed in 1976 to promote a strong U.S. defense and support for allies in the Middle East, including Israel.
