The view through the windshield of the Israeli armored vehicle was surreal. Hosted by the 99th Division under Southern Command, our small group entered Gaza through the same breach the Israel Defense Forces used during the opening stages of the ground offensive following the Oct. 7 attacks.
The road wound through shattered neighborhoods whose homes concealed entrances to an underground tunnel network. Rubble covered everything. The signs of fighting were unmistakable. Over the next several hours, I saw compelling signs of tactical success while a second campaign, fought across screens and headlines, slipped away.
There is a lesson in this that the U.S. should not ignore: Success in modern conflict demands far greater emphasis on the information domain than we have been willing to give it. This lesson is even more relevant now, in real time, as hostilities in Iran flare anew.
