Joel Zinberg, M.D., J.D.

Joel Zinberg, M.D., J.D., F.A.C.S., recently completed two years as the General Counsel and a Senior Economist at the Council of Economic Advisers in the Executive Office of the President in Washington DC. He is a surgeon specializing in general surgery and surgical oncology at The Mount Sinai Hospital and is an associate clinical professor of surgery at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City.

Previously, Dr. Zinberg was on the New York State Board of Professional Medical Conduct and the President and a trustee of the New York County Medical Society. He has also created and taught courses in law, medicine, and health care policy at Columbia University School of Law. He was a visiting scholar at the American Enterprise Institute, where he works on health policy and health care reform, specifically the impact of laws and regulations on the practice of medicine.

Dr. Zinberg has written for publications as varied as The Wall Street Journal, the Bulletin of the American College of Surgeons, the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), City Journal, and law review journals. His topics range from the Affordable Care Act and its impact on physicians, electronic medical records, measuring value in medicine, ethical issues surrounding organ transplants, and treating AIDS and Ebola patients. He is also the author of book chapters on the legal, financial, and ethical issues of organ transplantation.

Dr. Zinberg has a J.D. from Yale Law School where he was a senior editor of the Yale Law Journal. He has an M.D. from the College of Physicians & Surgeons at Columbia University, is board certified in surgery, and is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He obtained his B.A. from Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania where he studied economics, biochemistry, and microbiology.
