On July 23, Brigadier General Assaf Orion, head of the Strategic Division in the IDF briefed JINSA leaders on the strategic objectives of “Operation Protective Edge.”
General Assaf Orion serves as head of the Strategic Division in the IDF general staff planning directorate. The division’s responsibilities include strategic planning, policy and strategy, as well as the IDF international cooperation and liaison with neighboring militaries and with regional peacekeeping forces. Since 2006, he headed two strategic planning departments in the IDF general staff, and the IDF liaison unit. In these positions he participated in the IDF dialogues with the U.S. defense, Egyptian and Jordanian armed forces, UNIFIL, UNDOF, UNTSO, MFO, and with other foreign military, defense, and diplomatic interlocutors. He holds a Masters degree in Public Administration from Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government (2000), focusing on national security, negotiations and conflict resolution.
