For his efforts to protect U.S. interests overseas, Centerville native Paul Wiseman was recently presented the Grateful Nation Award from the Jewish Institute for National Security Affairs.

Wiseman, a master sargeant, was one of six to receive the award in a ceremony last month.

He was recognized for leading his detachment to help re-establish an embassy in Africa shortly after the fall of a dictator. His detachment also led missions to destroy munitions before they could fall into the hands of extremists, developed emergency evacuation plans and provided personal security for visiting leaders in sensitive areas, according to an article on the presentation by Roger Aronoff.

“We’re just really proud of him,” said his sister, Annie Norton of Bountiful. “It’s something he’s been doing since he was 18. It’s amazing the sacrifices he’s made.”

Wiseman, a 1999 graduate of Viewmont High, was pictured next to Sen. Lindsey Graham, (R-SC), at the awards presentation. Graham was honored for his service in the Air Force, the Air Force Reserves and in the Air Force JAG School.
