On February 2, the JINSA Los Angeles Cabinet kicked off 2012 with a briefing by Bret Stephens of the Wall Street Journal. Dubbing 2012 “the year of decision,” Stephens discussed the rise of Islamism and Iran’s quest for nuclear weapons against the backdrop of a weakening West.

Stephens further discussed scenarios of “unintended consequences” of a military strike against Iran versus “foreseeable consequences” of allowing Iran to develop nuclear weapons. He likened the Argentine junta’s policy of putting all its interest in one cause – the Falkland Islands – to the Iranian regime’s policy regarding its nuclear weapons program. The junta collapsed when the United Kingdom defeated Argentine military forces occupying the islands. Stephens portended that the same could be true for the theocratic regime ruling Iran today.

The JINSA Los Angeles Cabinet was formed to explore issues affecting both American and Israeli security. Cabinet members are invited to briefings on security and defense issues several times a year.
