Here in Abilene the police don’t tend to go out of the 110 square mile city limits, but one officer recently traveled 7000 miles away to expand his knowledge of law enforcement.

“So I traveled to Israel and landed in Tel Aviv and spent time all through out the state of Israel and we also traveled to Aman, Jordan. I traveled as a part of a 14 member law enforcement delegation,” said Chief Stan Standridge.

The trip was funded by JINSA, a non profit that selects top law enforcement in the united states to go and learn about Israel’s law enforcement and share the US’s law enforcement protocols.

“It was just an incredible opportunity, and it was a laborious opportunity,” said Standridge.

The delegation received briefs from the Israeli police, Israeli defense forces, and from Israel’s equivalent of the FBI.

“We actually got to see with our own eyes how they’re responding to terror in these two states,’ said Standridge.

The Americans taught the Israelis how to deal more effectively with criminal law while the Israelis taught the delegation about dealing with terrorism.

“You don’t see, except for in Jerusalem and the old city, you don’t see cops everywhere. That was a paradigm shift, i figured they’d be everywhere but you don’t see them everywhere. Nor do you feel this palpable tension, or this fear. I never really experienced it at all,’ said Standridge.

This is the first time an officer from Abilene has been selected.
