The Threat of Cybercrime with FBI Special Agent in Charge Leo Taddeo

On May 21, Leo Taddeo, Special Agent in Charge of Special Operations/Cyber Division for the FBI’s New York Field Office, spoke to a group of JINSA leaders in Washington, DC. Mr. Taddeo leads over 400 special agents and professional support personnel in cyber investigations, surveillance operations, information technology support, and crisis management. The event was hosted by JINSA supporter Capt. Mike Seifert, Director of Naval Programs at Honeywell.

Mr. Taddeo gave a high-level briefing on cyber terrorism, cybercrime, and the tactics used by the FBI to combat this growing epidemic. He explained the FBI’s role in cyber security and how it differs from the Department of Defense and the Department of Homeland Security. In addition, Taddeo also explained the economic and national security threats of cybercrime and the constantly evolving challenges the FBI faces.

The event was especially timely given the recent FBI operation that took down over 90 hackers worldwide as well as the Justice Department’s decision to charge the Chinese military with cyber-espionage. Mr. Taddeo briefed the group about both of these scenarios and more.

Mr. Taddeo was also a participant in JINSA’s 2013 Law Enforcement Exchange Program to Israel and spoke about the value of this important JINSA program.
