Middle East Air Defense After Iran’s 2024 Attacks Against Israel
Iran’s unprecedented attack on Israel in April 2024 of over 300 ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and drones marked one of the largest and most sophisticated aerial barrages in history. In response, a U.S.-led multinational coalition, including historic collaboration with Arab partners, helped Israel defeat Iran’s attack. Just six months later, on October 1, Iran launched a second massive attack, this time involving 200 ballistic missiles, which U.S. and Israeli forces also defeated.
These attacks, their defeat by the U.S.-led coalition, and their implications for the region’s evolving air defense architecture are the focus of JINSA’s new report, Forged Under Fire: Middle East Air Defense After Iran’s 2024 Attacks on Israel. The report assesses the historic nature of the strikes, identifies key lessons learned, and outlines critical recommendations for advancing the region’s integrated air and missile defense (IAMD) going forward.
To discuss the report, JINSA will be hosting a panel discussion with former Commander of U.S. Air Forces Central Command Lt Gen (ret.) Joseph Guastella, JINSA Randi and Charles Wax Senior Fellow and report co-author John Hannah, and former Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for the Middle East and U.S. Ambassador to Israel Daniel Shapiro.
The conversation will be moderated by JINSA Associate Director of Foreign Policy and report co-author Ari Cicurel.
